Life in Port Armstrong

Living and working in Port Armstrong has its own set of unique challenges and rewards.  While the traffic isn’t much of a problem, the bears can get to be a bit of a nuisance.  Access to the hatchery is by boat or floatplane, and is often hampered by Southeast Alaska’s notorious weather.  There is no running to the store for a carton of milk - groceries and other supplies typically arrive on the Eyak, a fishing tender that carries mail and freight for the area.

Because of the isolation, Port Armstrong is not just a place to work - it’s a community.  Employees and their families work, live and play together.  While the remote location may have its challenges, residents are rewarded with an amazing wilderness right at their doorstep.  This region of Baranof Island has world-class fishing, hunting, and exploring.  The natural setting, self-sufficient lifestyle, and commitment to the hatchery’s mission are the reasons our residents are here.
