Port Armstrong Hatchery is located on southern Baranof Island in Southeast Alaska, about 75 air miles from Sitka.

Port Armstrong is a private non-profit (PNP) hatchery, operating under a permit from the State of Alaska. PNP hatcheries raise and release juvenile salmon to enhance salmon fisheries, and harvest a portion of the returning fish to pay operating expenses.

Port Armstrong Hatchery currently releases about 80 million pink salmon, 28 million chum salmon, 2.4 million coho salmon, and 250,000 Chinook salmon each year.  A small portion of those (1-10%) survive to return as adult salmon.

The hatchery’s 2012 Annual Management Plan details the hatchery operations and history of production.

The hatchery is home to eight year-round staff and their families, with additional seasonal employees.  The nearest town is Port Alexander, a small fishing village about 5 miles away, with Sitka serving as a commercial center.
